Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) is the science of vehicular and indoor environmental control. HVAC is actually the science of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) of a space. HVAC system includes the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems of buildings or other enclosed spaces. HVAC usually refers to a single process or set of processes; however, the term can apply to a variety of processes or systems. These include: heat pump systems, air source heat pumps, refrigerant gasification, and energy recovery ventilators. The purpose of these processes is to maintain indoor environments at their defined temperature, for a controlled ventilation of indoor air, and to reduce or eliminate the need for artificial air and heating, while maximizing the temperature of the outdoor surrounding.

HVAC involves the use of heat or cool air, the output of a heat pump or air conditioner, and combustion of some fuel, to provide warmth, and cooling of an indoor environment. A common HVAC system is a forced-air furnace. In an HVAC system, the ductwork carries the heated or cooled air to the coils in the furnace where it is circulated, and the closed end of the duct transports the warmed air back into the building. The basic mechanism of HVAC is similar to that of an air-conditioning system where a furnace heats a room, and an air-conditioning system cools a room by circulating the cooled air.
Since HVAC has its roots in heating, there are also many similarities between HVAC and air conditioning. HVAC and AC are also able to jointly control the temperature of indoor environments. For instance, AC systems may operate on a timer, regulate the flow of air or heat through an open or closed duct, or incorporate intelligent control technology that provides a virtual temperature control for HVAC furnaces.
